Why us?

We are experienced. The Word Shop was established in 1990. Our founder and Principal Consultant, Gina Smith, holds a degree in Business Communication with a major in Advertising from the Queensland University of Technology. She also has 19 years experience creating words that work for businesses, governments and creative agencies – this includes 16 years working for the Queensland Government in creative writing and communication management roles. When the workload demands it, Gina draws from a team of experienced freelancers who give her a hand.

We are available. Writing, editing, proofreading and preparing communication plans isn’t something we do in our spare time; it’s what we do full-time. For many of our competitors this kind of work is just their part-time interest. They squeeze it in around other full-time commitments, leaving little time for you.

We are thinkers. We spend just as much time thinking as we do writing. We think about your business – your strengths and weaknesses, the issues you face and your communication objectives. We also think about your audience – who they are, their knowledge of your business and what motivates them to take action. It’s only after we’ve put all of these things together that we start work on the words. It explains why we are regularly commended by our clients for our ability to understand what they want to say and our ability to say it.

We are full of ideas. Whether you are seeking a big creative idea that will help you stand out from the rest or you want to share a simple and straightforward message, we will bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to your business and your communications. Our independence allows us to walk in the shoes of your audience. This ensures your message is right on target.

We are responsive. We know that you work with many constraints – most of which are out of your control – which is why we are very responsive with our delivery. All good things take time though, so longer lead times are always better. However, we can turn small tasks and straightforward quotations around in 24 hours if they are urgent, or in 2-3 working days if they are routine. Mid-sized projects generally take up to five working days and large projects usually take us a couple of weeks. We can provide a firm timeframe for your project once we’ve submitted our quotation to you and you’ve returned your approval for us to proceed in writing.

We are good value. Our clients keep coming back because they get good value from our work. We are a small business with low overheads yet we deliver very big results. Our fees are calculated using our hourly rate. We consider the task, estimate the amount of time we’ll spend on it and then provide you with a firm price. This all happens before we start work so you know exactly what your outlay will be.
